Machine shop guide
Machine shop RFQ checklist
A complete request for quote helps a machine shop evaluate feasibility and price the same scope you intend to buy. It also makes quotes from different suppliers easier to compare.
Include these job details
Use a consistent revision across every file and identify which document controls if the model and drawing differ. Avoid asking a supplier to infer requirements that affect manufacturing or inspection.
- Part number and drawing revision
- CAD file and dimensioned drawing
- Material specification and acceptable substitutions
- Prototype and production quantities
- Critical tolerances and surface finish
- Required coatings, heat treatment, or other outside processes
- Inspection reports, traceability, or documentation requirements
- Requested delivery date and shipping destination
Compare the whole quote
Check whether material, tooling, programming, inspection, outside processing, packaging, and freight are included. Confirm the quoted lead time starts from the same event, such as purchase-order acceptance and receipt of approved files.
Protect the revision trail
Name files clearly, preserve written clarifications, and issue an updated revision when a requirement changes. A clean record reduces the risk that an old drawing or informal note controls production.
