CNC turning: how it works and when to use it

CNC turning rotates stock while a cutting tool removes material. It is a natural fit for shafts, pins, bushings, threaded features, and other parts organized around a central axis.

Turning operations

A lathe can face an end, reduce an outside diameter, bore an inside diameter, cut grooves, add threads, and part a finished piece from bar stock. Live tooling and additional axes may add off-center holes or milled features without a separate setup.

What affects supplier fit

Maximum turning diameter and length, bar capacity, material experience, tolerance, surface finish, and batch size all matter. Long slender parts and thin walls may need special process planning to control vibration or distortion.

A useful RFQ package

Send a revision-controlled drawing and model, quantity, material specification, finishing requirements, inspection expectations, and delivery target. If an equivalent material or finish is acceptable, say so explicitly rather than leaving the supplier to guess.
